A lot of the housing stock we quote on went up between 1969 and 2007, with the bulk from the 1980s and 90s. That matters for a quote because doors and openers from that window use hardware sizes and mounting styles that changed more than once over those three decades - a torsion spring rated for a 1987-era door isn't always what's on the shelf for a 2005 one. When you call, we ask the age of the house, not just the door, because that tells us which era of track and drum we're likely dealing with before a truck even leaves.
We also ask about exposure. Salt Lake City sits in a cold, severe winter climate band, and that changes what we recommend for weatherstripping and insulation, and sometimes rules out a repair that would hold up fine somewhere milder.
Work We Turn Down
We don't do anything that isn't a garage door, opener, spring, track, panel, roller, or cable - no general handyman work, no structural framing, no gate systems. If your door is failing because the header above it is sagging or the slab underneath has heaved, that's a call for a contractor first; we'll tell you so instead of quoting around it.
We also won't quote a firm price sight unseen on anything involving a bent track, an off-track panel, or a door that's been forced closed with a broken spring still under tension. Those jobs vary too much door to door to guess at over the phone, and a wrong guess either lowballs you or scares you off a job that's actually simple. If a customer wants a number before we've seen the door, we'll give a range and flag it as a range.
One more limit worth saying plainly: on some older or custom doors, parts can take longer to source than the repair itself takes to do. If that's the case on your door, we'll tell you at the estimate, not after we've already started.
What Comes Next
A quote gets accurate once we know four things: the door's age or approximate install year, whether it's single or double, what's actually broken versus what's just noisy, and whether the opener is original to the door or was swapped in later. Photos help, especially of the spring, the track where it meets the wall, and the opener's motor unit.
What we can't price from a phone call: anything that needs the door open and under load to diagnose properly - a cable that's fraying but not yet snapped, an opener that grinds but still functions, a panel with hidden rust behind the trim. Those get a firm number once we've had eyes on them.
